Life Reflections (Page 2)

My thoughts regarding major events in my life.

Our little speck has a heart beat!

Nicole had another doctors appointment today. Since it was going to be a multi-hour ordeal and I was working, I didn’t go with her. She called me and I was nervous as to whether or not it would be good news or bad news. I was afraid to ask and we talked for a minute or two before she casually mentioned that she heard the heart beat. I can’t believe it — our little speck has a heart beat! I could hardly speak I was so surprised and excited! This is definitely good news! I was curious what our little speck was like, so IRead More →

I feel lucky to be living in the US

It was Warren Buffett that summed it up best: The odds for me to have been born in the US were 1 in 50. I won the ovarian lottery. If I had been born in Bangladesh, the chances are that I would not have had such great opportunity. If you don’t believe him, visit GlobalRichList.com.  Spoiler Alert: if you earn $850/year, you are more wealthy than half of the worlds population. The idea of the site seemed a bit snobbish at first, but the purpose of it is to show people that they earn much more than they think they do, to encourage charity.Read More →

Steve Jobs’ Inspirational Commencement Address

I don't own a Mac but Steve Jobs makes me wish I did every time I see one of his keynote addresses.  Today my friend Luke sent me this link to a non-Apple speech Jobs gave at Stanford in 2005.  Although I'm somewhat skeptical of inspirational speeches give by the 0.00001% who become extremely successful (while ignoring the other 99.99999%), I couldn't help but feel inspired.Read More →

I thought my wife was dead. She almost was.

I thought my wife Nicole was dead. It was one of the scariest moments of my life. It was late on a Saturday night and she was taking a bath before going to bed. I walked into the bathroom and found her motionless with her head tilted forward, with both her mouth and nose under water. I ran over to her, lifted her head, and shouted her name very loudly several times and she did not respond. My mind started flying through the scenario. I knew she could not have been in the tub for more than 5 minutes and that I needed to startRead More →

Grew a beard, moved to Indianapolis

I can’t believe it’s been so long since my last post. Where did the time go? I think I know where it went, and school and work account for most of it. I’d been wanting things to change for a while, but I wasn’t exactly sure how or why. I guess I was just fed up with everything tired of everything being the same, mostly the less-important aspects such as work and school. Well, things certainly did change. It all started last Christmas. I know, last Christmas was a long time ago in blog time, but it doesn’t seem that long ago to me. ItRead More →

Turned 30 and starting to feel even older than that

What is going on with me? I never thought turning 30 would have such an adverse effect on my philology. I rarely have any medical problems and I haven’t been to the doctor in the past 4 years. But now several problems are surfacing, the worst of which is a constant pain in my right wrist. It started about 3 months ago and will not go away. I finally promised Nicole that I would go in and have it checked so when the doctor asked me what brought me in, I cleverly answered “my wife”. Turns out about half of the guys who come inRead More →

Friends and Feeling the tide starting to change

So it’s been a long, long time since I’ve posted. So what? I’ve had a decent amount to drink earlier tonight and I’m still feeling the after effects. Let’s write. I had a couple of people from work over at 4:30 today. We enjoyed some beer that my wife brewed and played some pool. After that, my wife and I went out to dinner at a local Italian restaurant (DiVinos) and had a bottle of Merlot. Since it was the two of us, we ate at the bar. A guy named Kent sat down beside us. He seemed to be a nice guy, so IRead More →

Years of Dave Matthews Band Concerts

I’m going to see a Dave Matthews Band concert tonight. It’s been a couple of years since I’ve seen them live, so I’m looking forward to it. They have been a favorite group since I was a junior in college. Am I struggling to holding on to my youth? Yes, but not because I like this group. The last time I heard them play, I had an ear-to-ear grin for about 2 1/2 hours. Lots of musical creativity and energy (from them, not me). My wife and I briefly discussed the names of some of their songs and I got to thinking about the “lyrics”.Read More →

Why do people go “back to school”?

Why do people “go back to school”? I’m pondering this because of my own situation and because of the choices made by some co-workers. I’m trying to think beyond the typical answers such as “to get a better job” or “to make more money”. As opposed to “to get a better job”, I believe the real response should be “because I’m tired of my current job but I really don’t want to look for another job so I just start educating myself for something different and see what happens when I’m finished”. Not nearly as impressive of an answer, but at some level it isRead More →

Coffee instead of sleep

I believe I have discovered a new equation that explains the relationship between caffeine, free time, and the lack of sleep: daily performance = hours awake * amount of caffeine consumed / hours alseep I’ve never been a proponent of coffee or any stimulant for that matter. I just prefer to be a bit grumpy in the morning. I’ll drink and enjoy coffee and caffeinated soft drinks on rare occasions, but it has never been a daily habit for me. I’ve always believe that if you don’t have enough will to get enough sleep and then get up in the morning and do what youRead More →
