Turned 30 and starting to feel even older than that

What is going on with me? I never thought turning 30 would have such an adverse effect on my philology. I rarely have any medical problems and I haven’t been to the doctor in the past 4 years. But now several problems are surfacing, the worst of which is a constant pain in my right wrist. It started about 3 months ago and will not go away. I finally promised Nicole that I would go in and have it checked so when the doctor asked me what brought me in, I cleverly answered “my wife”. Turns out about half of the guys who come inRead More →

Friends and Feeling the tide starting to change

So it’s been a long, long time since I’ve posted. So what? I’ve had a decent amount to drink earlier tonight and I’m still feeling the after effects. Let’s write. I had a couple of people from work over at 4:30 today. We enjoyed some beer that my wife brewed and played some pool. After that, my wife and I went out to dinner at a local Italian restaurant (DiVinos) and had a bottle of Merlot. Since it was the two of us, we ate at the bar. A guy named Kent sat down beside us. He seemed to be a nice guy, so IRead More →

Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds – Elliot Hall of Music – Purdue – West Lafayette (2003-04-03)

This was the second Dave & Tim show I’ve attended and clearly the best. I funded some college students semester when I purchased front row tickets off of Ebay, and it was worth every penny. I drove up to campus a few weeks before the show to pick-up the tickets in person — I wanted to make sure I had them in-hand. The night of the show, I was supposed to have been attending an economics class that was part of my IU MBA program, but instead I skipped and went to Purdue University with my wife. An amazing 3+ hour show. This is theRead More →

Suunto Cobra PC Interface I recently completed my own interface for connecting a PC, Palm, or PocketPC to a Suunto Cobra or Vyper dive computer. A complete US parts list is available here: Suunto Interface Parts List USA.pdf (Adobe Acrobat file, 72 KB) These parts were identified and assembled thanks to the help of Roli. Complete assembly instructions are available on his website, located here. Notes: There used to be a supplier I in Germany that manufactured spring-loaded contacts. I can’t find an equivalent in the US. The connectors listed in my parts list above do not work extremely well without extensive modification — spring-loadedRead More →

Dave Matthews Band – Verizon Wireless Music Center – Indianapolis – Noblesville (2002-08-10)

This is the second DMB show for Nicole and a I this summer. The set list for this show was very similar to the setlist played in Cincinnati, with half the songs being the same. This is not to say that I didn’t enjoy hearing them again — the show was excellent. Compared to Riverbend, the sound at Deer Creek (aka Verizion Wireless) was much better. Riverbend was very muffled and overly bass-heavy where I was sitting. Plus, the low ceiling of the Riverbend amphitheater gave a very cramped feeling. Deercreek is much preferred. The Stone is a great opener and was just enjoyable theRead More →

Nicole and I made the trek to Cincinnati to see DMB. For some reason, I decided at the last minute that we needed to see two shows, so I ordered tickets last minute on Ebay. As we arrived at the venue, I was surprised by the gravel parking lots, the abandoned carnival we walked through to get to the stadium, and the cramped feeling of the amphitheater; it’s big so why does it seem so small? Before the show started, I ran into my brothers high school girlfriend Heater – I was trying to figure out why I knew her; I knew I recognized herRead More →

Years of Dave Matthews Band Concerts

I’m going to see a Dave Matthews Band concert tonight. It’s been a couple of years since I’ve seen them live, so I’m looking forward to it. They have been a favorite group since I was a junior in college. Am I struggling to holding on to my youth? Yes, but not because I like this group. The last time I heard them play, I had an ear-to-ear grin for about 2 1/2 hours. Lots of musical creativity and energy (from them, not me). My wife and I briefly discussed the names of some of their songs and I got to thinking about the “lyrics”.Read More →

Why do people go “back to school”?

Why do people “go back to school”? I’m pondering this because of my own situation and because of the choices made by some co-workers. I’m trying to think beyond the typical answers such as “to get a better job” or “to make more money”. As opposed to “to get a better job”, I believe the real response should be “because I’m tired of my current job but I really don’t want to look for another job so I just start educating myself for something different and see what happens when I’m finished”. Not nearly as impressive of an answer, but at some level it isRead More →

Meeting new people (from my wife’s work)

Nicole and I traveled to Indianapolis to have dinner at one of her co-workers houses and it was very enjoyable. The food was great and the conversation was better. It’s fun to meet new people and have enjoyable discussions. I just hope I didn’t bore anyone with my occasional engineering or computer talk. I knew everyone’s name, but I was nervous about screwing them up if I were to say them. I’ve made an effort to be better with remembering names. Accomplished. Now I need to feel more confident about using the names I’ve remembered. After several hours of work over a period of severalRead More →

Coffee instead of sleep

I believe I have discovered a new equation that explains the relationship between caffeine, free time, and the lack of sleep: daily performance = hours awake * amount of caffeine consumed / hours alseep I’ve never been a proponent of coffee or any stimulant for that matter. I just prefer to be a bit grumpy in the morning. I’ll drink and enjoy coffee and caffeinated soft drinks on rare occasions, but it has never been a daily habit for me. I’ve always believe that if you don’t have enough will to get enough sleep and then get up in the morning and do what youRead More →
